Episode 3 - The Spell of a Soft Manta

In the universe of the exhibition Nature of Robotics - A Expanded Field, we invite you to join us for “In Conversation”, a live video discussion series with the artists and scientists that have been a part of our terminology-defying exhibition.

For the third week of “In Conversation”, this coming Thursday, July 8th, at 6 PM CEST, we invite you to join us for a conversation between Nature of Robotics’ curator Giulia Bini and artists Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson, together with EPFL Professor Auke Ijspeert, head of the Biorobotics Lab and Jonathan Arreguit, Ph.D. at EPFL's BioRob Lab.

Developed in the framework of a remote artist in residence program promoted by the EPFL College of Humanities, the installation Delay Lines, (feedback) is a new, site-specific variation of the work begun in the context of IF THE SNAKE, the Okayama Art Summit 2019. In Delay Lines, (feedback), Dubbin and Davidson’s knowledge in the field of soft robotics is enriched by data developed in collaboration with Professor Auke Ijspeert‘s Biorobotics Laboratory. The visualization explores the relationships between the manta and the simulated virtual environment. The talk will focus on the remote collaboration between the artists and scientists which was realized during the challenging confinement year of 2020, and on different and convergent perspectives on topics such as artificiality, delay, simulation, locomotion, material transformation, triggered by a soft manta ray robot.

Join us on Thursday, July 8th, at 6 PM CEST for a conversation that expands beyond technology, automation, media art and installations, to bring a new perspective on culture and future scenarios.
