Cosmos Archaeology opens in Shanghai

The exhibition Cosmos Archaeology, Exploring the Universe through Art and Science is now open at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum!

An augmented version of our 2022 exhibition Cosmos Archaeology: Explorations in Time and Space, this new version was curated by EPFL professors Sarah Kenderdine (EPFL eM+) and Jean-Paul Kneib (EPFL LASTRO) along with local independent curator Iris Long. It features twenty-five unique installations by international and Chinese artists and researchers, bringing together art and scientific visualisation in further exploring the depths and dimensions of the universe.

The inauguration took place on Thursday 16 May 2024 in the presence the Museum Directors, the curators and the artists, as well as the main partners of the exhibition, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Yuanzhen Culture Co., Swissnex in China and Présence Suisse.

The result of a two-year collaborative research between the EPFL Laboratory of Astrophysics (LASTRO) and the EPFL Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+), Cosmos Archaeology seamlessly weaves scientific research and artistic explorations to offer sensorial and emotional visualisations of cutting edge scientific data. The resulting installations offer interactive and immersive ways of experiencing astrophysical data, and dialogue with artistic installations that convey unique stances on space and the universe.

For the first international touring of an EPFL exhibition, it is an immense pride for both laboratories and EPFL Pavilions to have collaborated with a devoted team of Swiss and Chinese actors to offer this new version to a broad and enthusiastic Chinese audience.

It is also a great satisfaction for the newly opened Shanghai Astronomy Museum to host an international exhibition for the first time, and to offer its 4,000 daily visitors a striking and exclusive interconnection of art and science.

The exhibition will run until 17 September, make sure to visit if you are in Shanghai!
